Landscape & Garden Crew Leader

Job Description: 

Based in West St. Paul, Minnesota Roots is a small landscape company that has been providing design, install, and maintenance services locally for over 25 years. We are looking to hire a Crew Leader for our upcoming season. As a Crew Leader, you will supervise and participate in installation and maintenance tasks, ensure quality work, and lead the team to complete jobs efficiently and safely. Weeding, mulching, pruning, amending soil, grading, planting, some hardscaping, and record keeping are some of the tasks you will perform and direct in this position. You will lead maintenance teams consisting of 1-3 crew members and sometimes work under the director and/or managers for installation of larger projects. Our gardens vary in style from formal to informal, cottage to native, and are all maintained using organic techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Take direction from director and managers

  • Understand the tools needed to complete the daily tasks 

  • Learn what individual gardens require based on style and client request

  • Delegate work, assign tasks, and oversee crew members

  • Ensure projects are completed on time and meet standards 

  • Maintain flexibility as projects and tasks may shift, offer creative input, and troubleshoot onsite as needed

  • Communicate with director and clients about concerns and questions

  • Keep the shop, tools, and trucks clean, stocked and organized

  • Lead by example and strive to improve team proficiency

Hours and what to expect:

  • Meet at 8 a.m. at our shop in West St. Paul 

  • Check in with director, prepare trucks, direct team, and head to jobsite

  • Most sites are located in St. Paul and a few in Minneapolis and surrounding areas

  • Typical day will finished by 5-6pm, Monday through Friday with an occasional Saturday if needed

  • Season begins in April when the ground thaws, and ends in late November or early December depending on weather  

  • This is a full-time seasonal position with some flexibility

Qualifications: 

  • Educational background in Horticulture and/or have a minimum of 2-3 years experience in the landscaping, gardening, nursery or related field

  • Bachelor's degree or some college (preferred not required)

  • Experience in leadership or management roles (preferred not required)

  • Ability to work consistently and efficiently alone or with a crew

  • Good problem solving skills 

  • Strong knowledge of plants and tools

  • Excellent communication, note taking, and organizational skills 

  • Physically able to perform manual labor 

  • Valid driver’s license 

Compensation and benefits:

  • Starting at $22/hr or higher depending on experience 

  • Higher rates may be offered for specialty skills such as hardscaping, arboriculture, or other relevant experience 

  • Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) is provided

  • Overtime pay is offered if you exceed 40 hours in a week

Landscape & Garden Crew Member

Job Description:

We are hiring crew members to assist with landscaping and gardening tasks. Weeding, mulching, pruning, amending soil, grading, planting, and watering are some of the tasks you will be directed to perform in this position. The work is physical, requires attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to take direction and be flexible throughout the day. Our gardens vary in style from formal to informal, cottage to native, and are all maintained using organic techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Take direction from leads, managers, and director

  • Assist with installation and maintenance jobs

  • Understand task requirements and tools needed 

  • Follow company protocols for quality standards, efficiency, and safety

  • Communicate effectively with lead and crew members

  • Maintain flexibility as projects and tasks may shift

  • Check in with lead, prepare trucks or complete shop tasks, then go to jobsite

  • Most sites are located in St. Paul and a few in Minneapolis and surrounding areas

  • All sites will have a lead or manager on site

  • Typical day will finished by 5-6pm, Monday through Friday with an occasional Saturday if needed 

  • Season begins in April when the ground thaws, and ends in late November or early December depending on weather   

  • Both part-time and full-time seasonal positions are available

Qualifications: 

  • Highschool diploma, GED, or equivalent 

  • Educational background in Horticulture and/or experience in the landscaping, gardening, nursery or related field (preferred not required)

  • Ability to work consistently and efficiently alone or with a crew

  • Reliable and eager to learn 

  • Knowledge or interest in plants is a plus!

  • Physically able to perform manual labor 

  • Valid driver’s license

Compensation and benefits:

  • Starting at $18/hr or higher depending on experience 

  • Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) is provided
